Coach Tuchel confirms: Eric Dier before moving to FC Bayern

As of: January 11, 2024 12:06 p.m

FC Bayern Munich’s first winter transfer is imminent. Tottenham professional Eric Dier is in Munich. But the FC Bayern coach doesn’t want to announce any completion yet – memories of deadline day are awakened.

Eric Dier is about to move to FC Bayern Munich. The 29-year-old defender is already in Munich, coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed on Thursday. However, Tuchel did not want to announce any completion yet: “We have experienced too much for that. Even in the summer. I will only start planning when the player has signed,” said Tuchel.

Dier as a “consolation” for the failed Dragusin transfer?

A reference to deadline day in the summer, when midfielder Joao Palhinha had already completed medical checks at Säbener Straße, but a transfer still fell through. It would be surprising that this would also happen to Dier. When it came to Palhinha, Fulham didn’t let their important player go. Tottenham should be happy to get Dier off their payroll.

Tottenham had that yesterday Transfer of central defender Radu Dragusin announced. FC Bayern had also tried hard to find the Romanian, but he decided on the club from London – probably because FC Bayern had hesitated a little too long to enter into concrete negotiations.

Dier: “Specialist as central defender”

Dier was hardly used at Tottenham this season. Harry Kane’s good friend, with whom he has already played together in club and national team, is planned as a central defender in Munich. “He is a specialist as a central defender,” said Tuchel and added: “He also played in defensive midfield, but recently he was actually only a central defender. He can play both central defender positions and also in the back three.” As a result, Goretzka will probably no longer have to help out in the defense center, said Tuchel with a laugh.

There have been repeated personnel problems at FC Bayern over the course of the season so far. And there are currently even bigger gaps in Munich’s defense than there were in the summer. Min-jae Kim wants to win the Asian Cup with coach Jürgen Klinsmann. Noussair Mazraoui traveled to the Africa Cup of Nations with Morocco despite injury. And Bouna Sarr, who has been an absolute emergency right-winger for years, is also missing for the long term due to a torn cruciate ligament – so there is currently not a single real right-back in the squad.

Tuchel on further transfers: “Try to get things started”

Therefore, Tuchel explained: “We are trying to continue to do things to make the team better.” He sees a particular need in the right-back position and in defensive midfield. But he is also responsible for improvements: “This can’t just be done with transfers, but with discussions, with exercises,” said Tuchel, who also wants to keep an eye on standard situations in the coming weeks.

Nevertheless, he would like to welcome more additions to his squad. The winter transfer period runs until February 2nd. But Tuchel doesn’t want to wait that long: “Patience is not my strongest virtue. I have become more patient than before because I also know how complicated the transfer business has become and referred to the advisors. Sometimes as a coach it is very easy to say “I would like such and such”.

Whether Dier is ready for the game against Hoffenheim on Friday (from 8.30 p.m. on BR24Sport live in the radio report and in the ticker) is available remains to be seen. The personnel situation would definitely allow for an additional squad position.
