After the bitter end in the playoff semi-finals of the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL), coach Andrea Trinchieri announced his departure from Bayern Munich.
“It’s over, it was a great ride, I have no regrets and people can now name the label for these three years,” said the Italian late Friday evening.
This was preceded by the 102:104 (92:92, 43:46) of Munich after extra time at ratiopharm Ulm, it was the third defeat in the third game of the best-of-five series. The runner-up failed with 0:3 on the seventh of the main round.
Trinchieri took over the team in 2020 and also celebrated successes: Munich won the BBL Cup in 2021 and this year, and in 2021 and 2022 the club was the first German representative to make the EuroLeague playoffs. The championship title, which he had won three times with Brose Bamberg, was no longer granted to Trinchieri with Munich: in 2021 and 2022 he and his team failed in the final at Alba Berlin.
“Andrea gave us his heart”
“I came to Bayern during the pandemic and the players and coaches found a way to go through a lot of resistance, to fight to the very end. I think this group deserved a title more,” said the 54-year-old: “I did my best every day, also made mistakes and corrected them. That’s it, thanks and goodbye.”
Managing Director Marko Pesic thanked the coach. “Andrea gave us his heart, he was always there 100 percent that we were successful. But you also have to say that he was very unlucky with injuries in the last two years,” explained the former German international: ” He’s a pro who sees basketball as a calling, not a job. I have nothing but good things to say about him.”
