The end of Thomas Tuchel as coach of FC Bayern is sealed. The club confirmed this on Wednesday. However, the two parties want to work together until the end of the season.
The end of Thomas Tuchel’s term as coach of FC Bayern has been sealed. The club confirmed this on Wednesday. The decision is “the result of an amicable conversation between CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and Thomas Tuchel,” writes FC Bayern on its own website. The contract would actually have run until summer 2025.
FC Bayern is threatened with a titleless season
After three defeats from the last three games, the Munich team are facing a possible season without a title. In the Bundesliga they recently lost against leaders Bayer Leverkusen and last weekend against VfL Bochum. In the Champions League there was an away defeat against Lazio Rome in the first leg of the round of 16.
The Munich team are currently in second place in the Bundesliga and are already eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen. The Munich team was eliminated from the DFB Cup in the second round.
Dreesen: “Achieve the maximum possible”
In order to prevent a season without a title, sports director Dreesen also holds the team responsible: “Every individual in the club is expressly required to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and the Bundesliga. I also explicitly take the team into account here Mandatory. Especially in the Champions League, we are convinced that after the 0-1 defeat in the first leg at Lazio Rome, we will advance to the quarter-finals in the second leg in our fully occupied Allianz Arena with our fans behind us.”
Thomas Tuchel is only quoted in the club’s statement as saying: “We have agreed that we will end our collaboration after this season. Until then, I and my coaching team will of course continue to do everything we can to ensure maximum success.”
Tuchel’s record in Munich: A championship and a lot of trouble
Tuchel only took over the coaching job in Munich at the end of March last year, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann. Tuchel and FC Bayern managed to overtake Borussia Dortmund in a tight championship race on the final day of the match. The Munich team celebrated their eleventh championship in a row.
However, the summer transfer period was marked by disagreements between the coach and management. Tuchel had repeatedly publicly called for reinforcements, which had brought him criticism from the board. After the unfortunate actions on the transfer market, he renewed his criticism.
Possible Tuchel successors: Zidane, Conte, Alonso or Hoeneß?
Despite a good start to the season, Säbener Straße was rarely quiet. After the winter break, the Munich team had a hard time and lost sight of championship rivals Leverkusen after several weak performances.
Possible successors have been discussed for days. Big names like Zinédine Zidane and Antonio Conte are said to be under discussion on Säbener Straße, as are Sebastian Hoeneß, coach of VfB Stuttgart and nephew of Uli Hoeneß, and Xabi Alonso.
