In office since 2018
Ralph Hasenhüttl has to worry about his job at FC Southampton. The Austrian’s time is coming to an end, he writes “Telegraph” meaningful and thus strongly questions the future of the 55-year-old. If Hasenhüttl and his team also lose the difficult away game at Manchester City (Saturday, 4 p.m.), his departure is getting closer.
The former Leipzig coach has been in charge of the “Saints” since December 2018 – it is 1400 days up to today, Thursday, so Hasenhüttl has stayed at the club for the longest time in around 100 years. His contract runs until June 2024. Southampton have just two wins and 16th place after eight Premier League games, most recently losing three in a row. Hasenhüttl had already survived several weak phases since taking office, the current one could have serious consequences despite the modest goal of staying up in the league. The “Saints” recently drew two in the league against Man City, but Hasenhüttl’s record against the champions is negative.
Biggest market value losers in the Premier League (September 2022)
Hasenhüttl proved to be a skilful tactician who knew how to achieve occasional sensational victories against a much stronger team, writes the “Telegraph”. At the same time, however, there is now a prevailing feeling that the team needs a coach who works with young and developing players. There is also a lack of communication next to the square. A successor candidate is not yet in sight.
Southampton FC: The crisis started at the end of the 2021/22 season
FC Southampton ended the 2021/22 season with eight defeats from the last eleven games, which is why an analysis is said to have taken place in the summer that Hasenhüttl survived unscathed – in contrast to most of his employees in the background. But: The club has gone through some changes at the top in the past. The forces that once installed and supported Hasenhüttl are no longer represented in the most important offices.
