The end of the twelve-game losing streak should give 1. FC Union Berlin a boost in self-confidence.
“The performance brought back a bit of joy, a smile. It hasn’t sparked any cheers yet. But it was important to break the streak,” said coach Urs Fischer on Saturday about the effects of the 1-1 draw with Italian champions SSC Napoli in the Champions League during the week.
On Sunday the Berliners will play in the Bundesliga against undefeated league leaders Bayer Leverkusen (3:30 p.m./Sky). In the league, Union has lost its last eight games and slipped into relegation place.
“We have to try to pick up where we left off in Naples. I think the team left a more stable impression, that we were more compact over 90 minutes and got that Union face on the pitch,” said the 57-year-old Swiss.
The Rhinelanders are currently the best team in the league, said Fischer. “We can’t offer them a lot of rooms,” he said. “If they play into the half spaces and have time to open up, the team has incredible quality.”
