Flemish Finance Minister Matthias Diependaele warns on Monday that co-parents have until the end of March to apply for a reduction in property tax.
When at least two children with a right to family benefits are domiciled in a home, the parents are entitled to a reduction in the withholding tax on real estate. In the case of co-parenting, both parents are entitled to part of the reduction, according to the same division as the residence arrangement or a division that they mutually agree on. “The parents must always request this division themselves. You can still make that request until the end of March,” Diependaele said in a statement.
Apply before March 31
The reduction for children entitled to family benefits is automatically granted on the property tax assessment notice for the home where the children are domiciled. From this year onwards, this reduction can be divided between both ex-partners in case of co-parenting. This does not happen automatically, but must be requested from the Flemish tax authorities before 31 March.
“On https://www.vlaanderen.be/vermindering-van-de-onroerende-voorheffing-voor-familiesbijslagsrechtigde-kinderen, parents will find the entire scheme clearly explained and a form to request the distribution,” Minister Diependaele explains. .
Tenants
Tenants are also entitled to this reduction for children entitled to child benefit. In that case, the reduction is granted on the property tax assessment notice of the landlord, and the tenants may deduct the amount of the reduction from the rent, according to the statement.
