Clubs agree: AS Roma frees Georginio Wijnaldum from Paris Saint-Germain | Dutch football

Georginio Wijnaldum makes the switch to AS Roma. The Orange international still has to pass the medical examination in the Italian capital, but his new employer already reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain this weekend.

This means that a formula that is acceptable to both clubs has been found to divide Wijnaldum’s salary costs. That 9 million euros on an annual basis was the last obstacle on the way to a rental deal, as it turned out before the weekend. Roma and PSG technical directors Thiago Pinto and Luis Campo have come to an agreement now that their clubs are both based in Israel. The Italians played a friendly match there against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening (1-0 win), the French champion will compete tonight in Tel Aviv with FC Nantes for the national supercup.

Wijnaldum himself is not in Israel. After a difficult debut season in Paris, he was definitively sidetracked this summer, when Christophe Gaultier was appointed at PSG as successor to coach Mauricio Pochettino. The Dutchman was not allowed to go to Japan for the training camp that the club organized there and recently kept his condition up with a number of fellow sufferers, players who have also been declared redundant in Paris.

Wijnaldum will be rented out this season, after which Roma can buy him from PSG for a fixed amount. If the midfielder plays a certain number of games for coach Jose Mourinho’s team, the buy option turns into an obligation. In that scenario, his generous salary is no longer a problem for the Romans, who can fall back on a favorable tax arrangement in their own country.

The 31-year-old Wijnaldum will meet two compatriots in the selection at Roma. Rick Karsdorp is a fixture on the right wing of Mourinho’s team, while Justin Kluivert has been loaned out to RB Leipzig and OGC Nice for the past two seasons respectively. According to Italian media, the former Ajax player is now nominated to leave Rome permanently, where his contract expires in one year.
