Willems was without a club after his departure this summer at the relegated Greuther Fürth. General manager Wouter Gudde is responsible for his arrival. He has been responsible for technical matters since the resignation of technical director Mark-Jan Fledderus.
Willems, in 2012 still a basic player for the Orange during the European Championships in Ukraine and Poland, became champion twice with PSV, in 2015 and 2016. He then left for Eintracht Frankfurt. He also played for Newcastle United, where he suffered a serious knee injury. He played his last game in the summer of 2022.
FC Groningen is fighting against relegation from the premier league. The team of trainer Dennis van der Ree is in seventeenth place after 22 games, with one point more than Cambuur. Groningen is experiencing a tumultuous season. In addition to the poor results, both head coach Frank Wormuth and technical director Mark-Jan Fledderus were fired.
