Club World Cup, the ranking: what Juve and Napoli need to qualify

Each federation can have a maximum of two teams. Inter are safe for Italy, the Azzurri need a success in Barcelona and a victory or two draws in the quarterfinals

The roster of teams that will participate in the next Club World Cup is increasingly taking shape, in the new four-year format with 32 teams. While Borussia Dortmund has secured its presence thanks to the elimination of Leipzig, effectively closing the discussion regarding Germany, in Italy the situation has yet to be defined. The premise is that each federation can only have two representatives. In our case, Inter is already certain of the place, while Lazio certainly won’t be there after the exit against Bayern Munich; therefore Juventus and Napoli are competing for the last available pass.

It’s all in the hands of Calzona’s group, since the Bianconeri are not competing in the Champions League this year. In the ranking which establishes the qualified clubs, Juventus has 47 points and Napoli 42. The Azzurri just need to equalize the position of their rivals in the standings because if the sum of points is the same, the player who has advanced in the cup the most in one of the seasons is rewarded considered; Napoli would return to the quarter-finals and not Juve who never went beyond the round of 16 in the period in question. Each victory is worth 2 points, each passage of the round following the group stage 1. Therefore, Napoli would have to add 5 points, which would happen if they eliminated Barcelona (1) with a success (2) and drawing both quarter-final matches or winning at least one of the two. Therefore, if Calzona’s team were to exit in the round of 16, Juventus would already be arithmetically certain of participation.

the others

As far as UEFA is concerned, they are already certain that there will be the three winners of the Champions League from 2021 to 2023 (Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City) to which will be added the winner of 2024. Through the ranking, however, they have already detached the pass from Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter, Porto, Benfica and Borussia Dortmund. If the winner of this edition falls among the clubs already mentioned, Salzburg will return. The others definitely qualified are Palmeiras, Fluminense, Flamengo, Al Ahly, Wydad, Al Hilal, Urawa Red Diamonds, Monterrey, Seattle Sounders, Club Leon and Auckland City.
