Petr Cech is an icon at Chelsea FC. For more than a decade he guarded the goal of coach Thomas Tuchel’s team. But now it’s time to say goodbye.
After the takeover of the English football club FC Chelsea by a US consortium, the long-time former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech also left the club. The 40-year-old, who was in goal for the Blues from 2004 to 2015, will step down from his role as technical adviser at the end of the month. This was announced by coach Thomas Tuchel’s club on Monday. Cech is leaving at his own request.
Previously, Chelsea had replaced the management floor. Among other things, sports director Marina Granowskaja, with whom Cech had worked closely, had vacated her post. “I feel like now is the right time for me to step aside,” Cech was quoted as saying. “I am delighted that the club is in an excellent position under new ownership and I am confident that it will thrive on and off the pitch in the future.”
A consortium led by US businessman Todd Boehly took over Chelsea from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. At the end of May, the two parties had agreed on the sale for around 5 billion euros. Boehly is also acting as interim sporting director until Granovskaya’s successor is settled.
