‘Close prisoners in EBI from everything’, politically fierce after Weski’s arrest

Part of the House of Representatives believes that communication from the Extra Secure Institution (EBI) in Vught should be further restricted. This is what coalition parties VVD and CDA and opposition parties SP and JA21 want, among others. Joost Eerdmans (JA21) goes the furthest in this. He also wants lawyers of prisoners in the EBI to be monitored more closely. He says this in response to the arrest of Inez Weski, Ridouan Taghi’s lawyer.

Taghi – main suspect in the extensive Marengo liquidation process – is locked up in the EBI in Vught. According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), lawyer Weski (68) would have shared information from her client Taghi from the EBI with his contacts in the outside world. She is suspected of participating in a criminal organization.

‘Shut off dangerous criminals from the outside world’
Eerdmans wants the rules to be ‘immediately adjusted’. As far as he is concerned, prisoners in the EBI are no longer allowed to call, write, email and receive visitors. “You have to shut these kinds of very serious and dangerous criminals off from the outside world.”

As far as he is concerned, there should also be stricter rules for their lawyers. Eerdmans thinks it is ‘very dangerous if they keep unlimited access without control. Their right to meet within the EBI must be restricted’. Among other things, he wants judicial review of all communication between EBI detainees and their lawyers.

Sharp on undermining
Ellian Ulysse (VVD) has been concerned about communication from the EBI for some time and has been arguing for more supervision of this for some time. CDA Member of Parliament Anne Kuik believes that communication in and around the EBI should be a constant point of attention. “Because abuse of freedoms by one person can lead to lack of freedom/insecurity for another.”

“Weski’s arrest is intense,” says PvdA MP Songül Mutluer, also on behalf of GroenLinks. She thinks it is important that Minister of Justice Dilan Yesilgöz informed the House in a letter on Friday about the lawyer’s arrest. In it, the minister wrote that she cannot make any further statements in the interest of the criminal investigation.
