Last-generation climate stickers blocked traffic on Friedrichstrasse after it was reopened to cars.
According to the police, eight blockers stuck themselves to the asphalt of the shopping mile on Monday afternoon. Other demonstrators marched through the street with banners.
The group “Now or Never – Parents Against the Fossil Industry” joined the protest and symbolically pushed about two dozen bobby cars out of the way with brooms and snow shovels. This is a symbol of the transport policy of the Berlin CDU, explained representatives.
During the action, a demonstrator wore a mask that showed the face of Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner. A demonstrator had a mask on with the face of Transport Senator Manja Schreiner (both CDU).
Since last Saturday, the section between French and Leipziger Strasse on Friedrichstrasse has been open to car traffic again. With the reopening, the type of use of the approximately 500 meter long section of the shopping street has changed for the fourth time.
The former traffic senator Bettina Jarasch (Greens) had the section closed to car traffic for the first time in August 2020 as part of a traffic test. Openings and closures followed. The new CDU-led Senate is much more open to car traffic than Jarasch.
Schreiner has now reopened the section for motor vehicles. According to the senator, she is pursuing a comprehensive traffic concept for the entire area in the long term.
