Climate activists arrested after chaining provincial house Haarlem

Extinction Rebellion demonstrators chained themselves to the provincial government building in Haarlem. The police acted tonight and arrested between five and ten.

On the Dreef in Haarlem, several activists have secured themselves tonight to both the house itself and a fence at the front of the building. They protested against the pollution of Tata Steel. They demanded an “immediate closure of Tata Steel”. A canvas reads “Tata closed now”.

Emergency services were prepared. Firefighters were quick to free the activists. A spokesman for the Noord-Holland police reports that between five and ten arrests were made around seven o’clock.

They did so by order of the mayor. He had banned the demonstration. “We first kindly asked them to stop and leave, but they did not respond,” said the police. “And so they were taken by us.”
