After Martin Schindler’s opening success, Germany’s number 1 Gabriel Clemens was unable to follow suit at the World Grand Prix of Darts Professionals.
The 39-year-old World Cup semi-finalist from Saarwellingen was defeated 2-0 by two-time world champion Peter Wright (53) from Scotland in the first round in Leicester, England.
Schindler (Strausberg) beat former world champion Raymond van Barneveld from the Netherlands 2-1 on Monday evening and will now face Englishman Stephen Bunting in the round of 16 in the Morningsyde Arena.
The “German Giant” Clemens got off to a good start on Tuesday evening in front of 3,000 spectators and took a 1-0 lead with a break in the first set. Then the thread broke and Wright ruthlessly exploited the German’s weakness.
In the second round, the Scot managed another break. Although Clemens struck back to make it 1-2, Wright held his nerve in the decisive leg and secured the victory.
