Clearing debris at gym where roof flew away: ‘All floors have to come out’

It’s debris clearing Saturday at the Solidgym gym in Den Bosch. On Friday afternoon, the roof flew off during storm Eunice. With enormous havoc as a result.

Large dryers make a lot of noise on the squash courts. They have to blow dry the jobs. The roof flew off here on Friday. Owner Nicole Pennings looks back: “We heard a very loud bang. I went to see and saw a waterfall the squash courts stand out. It was unbelievable.”

Immediately afterwards people came running from the fitcross room. “The roof also turned out to be gone and the water came in.”

All customers helped clean up. “They immediately mopped and made sure the fitness equipment was dry. Really heartwarming.”

Around seven o’clock Nicole decided to leave. “It became too dangerous. We kept hearing the wind beating on the roof and the corrugated sheets going up and down.”

Full of nerves, Nicole went back Saturday morning. “You don’t know what you’re going to find. But luckily it went well. The water on the squash courts had largely dried up.”

Still, she doesn’t underestimate the damage. “No, the runways cannot be used for the time being. All floors need to be removed and the walls repainted. Also in the crossfit room. And of course the building needs a new roof.”

Fortunately it will be dry on Saturday morning. “That’s a happy accident. The new roof will be installed on Saturday. Furthermore, it is mainly arranged with the insurance. And answer messages from customers who wish us success.”

The damage is provisionally estimated at 50,000 euros. The fitness room can open again on Sunday.
