Clear path in Germany: green light for doubling E233

Part of the E233 in Germany is being doubled. Transport Minister Olaf Lies of the state of Lower Saxony has given the green light for this. This concerns the section from the A37, at the Dutch-German border to Meppen.

The E233 is a commonly used route to get further into Germany, towards cities such as Bremen and Hamburg, or to reach Scandinavia. Approval is still required for the expansion of the majority of the route, from Meppen to the connection with the A1.

According to Minister Lies, a member of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), the expansion of the E233 into a dual carriageway is important for accessibility. The shortest route between economically important cities such as Amsterdam/Rotterdam and Bremen/Hamburg is via the E233, he emphasizes. On social media, Lies calls the doubling “a further building block for mobility”.

The doubling of the E233 is a wish of business organizations in Southeast Drenthe. They urged outgoing Transport Minister Marc Harbers (VVD) to take action. It is still unclear when work on the expansion will begin.
