Hannover 96 has ended its dry spell in the 2nd Bundesliga and celebrated its first win since the beginning of November. At the start of the 19th matchday on Friday (January 26, 2024), the Lower Saxony team won a well-deserved 3-0 (2-0) at home against 1. FC Nürnberg and, at least temporarily, moved up to sixth place in the table with 28 points.
Havard Nielsen scored his second brace of the season (6th minute/38th) for coach Stefan Leitl’s team, which had previously remained winless six times in a row (two defeats, four draws). Cedric Teuchert Teuchert (90+2) made the final score. After the fifth defeat in the last seven games, Nuremberg remains on 27 points and fell behind Hannover to eighth place.
“Today was really a nice day, a great game from us,” said Nielsen happily after the game. “We had 25 shots on goal, or even more. Of course we want to keep that in the future,” said the proud double goalscorer.
The mood of Nuremberg’s coach Christain Fiel was completely different: “The opponent today was too good for us.” We didn’t win any duels defensively. We didn’t take any offense either. “It’s hard to get points there,” he said disappointedly. “It was just far, far too little from us.”
In front of 25,100 spectators, Hannover dictated the action from the start and took the lead with the first good chance. After a cross from Enzo Leopold, Nielsen hit the far corner.
Hannover 96 continues to put pressure on them
96 continued to apply pressure and created opportunity after opportunity. Nielsen’s second goal with a header was long overdue. The Norwegian had already scored twice in the 7-0 win against Osnabrück in September.

Nuremberg’s coach Cristian Fiel made four changes in the second half, the “club” found its way into the game better after that and had good chances, like the one from midfield gem Can Uzun, who hit the post in the 61st minute. But unlike in the first leg, when Nuremberg scored 2-2 after a 2-0 lead at the break, this time it was no longer enough to get a point.
Many Nuremberg fans avoid visiting the stadium
Many visiting fans in the stadium did not notice Nünberger’s 3-0 defeat. They decided not to attend because, according to the club, they had been temporarily banned from performing a choreo if they had registered on time. Hanover fans, on the other hand, caused the game to be interrupted. The supporters threw tennis balls onto the grass several times in protest against the DFL’s planned investor involvement.
