Conversion finished by 2026?
The FC Barcelona stadium, which is in dire need of renovation, will undergo extensive modernization from June. The city of Barcelona issued the necessary building permits on Thursday, the Spanish football club announced. The renovation of the Camp Nou will therefore be able to start immediately after the end of the season, it said. The club expects the conversion to be completed during the 2025/2026 season.

According to the plans, the team should only “move” in the 2023/2024 season. Then the home games will be kicked off at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium. “It will be the best stadium in the world, in the best city in the world, in the best country in the world,” club president Joan Laporta said at the announcement. At a general meeting in December, renovation expenses of a maximum of 1.5 billion euros were approved. Loan financing is fully secured, Laporta said.
The modernization work is to begin, among other things, with the first and second spectator tiers of the Camp Nou, inaugurated in 1957. The spectator capacity should still be almost fully utilized next season, as Laporta assured. The club does not expect audience capacity to be reduced by around 50 percent until 2024/2025.
FC Barcelona has a debt of 1.35 billion euros. Thanks to the “Espai Barça” (“Barça Square”) project, the conversion of the Camp Nou and the entire surrounding club complex, including the Palau Blaugrana sports hall, an additional 200 million euros would be taken in the future, said the club boss. The Catalans’ stadium will be called Spotify Camp Nou after signing a “strategic partnership” agreement with music streaming leader Spotify.
