Last year, 236 citizens did what very few people in Germany can imagine: They voluntarily donated money to the state.
A total of exactly 63,988.54 euros was collected, as the federal government has now announced in response to a small inquiry from the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag.
The money flows into a so-called debt repayment account of the Federal Ministry of Finance and is used precisely for this purpose.
In view of the state’s billions in debt – caused by the corona pandemic and the Ukraine conflict – it is only a matter of the proverbial drop in the ocean.
The willingness to donate was also much higher: in 2018, more than 600,000 euros, i.e. ten times the amount, flowed into the account.

“The debt repayment account was set up by the Federal Ministry of Finance at the request of many committed citizens and is available for voluntary payments,” says the government’s response. “For this reason, it should also be continued in its current form in the future.”
The answer also lists the five highest incoming payments on the account held at the Deutsche Bundesbank for each month of the past year. They range from 15 to 25,000 euros.
