Cincinnati Sinner, out in the second round with Auger-Aliassime

Ahead 6-2 4-2, Jannik has two chances to close the game and go to the quarterfinals, but then yields 6-1 to the third

The adventure of the Italians in Cincinnati ends with Jannik Sinner throwing away a great chance by wasting two match points before giving way to Felix Auger-Aliassime who flies to the quarter-finals overcoming the South Tyrolean for 2-6 7-6 (1) 6-1.

The match

Sinner’s portentous start bodes well. The blue played flawlessly from the first games, leaving the opponent breathless and without escape. Excellent percentages of firsts, very precise with both the forehand and the backhand and very fast in moving to always take away the time from the rival. With this super aggressive tennis, Sinner carried on up to 6-2 4-2, having a match that seemed to be going downhill. At this point, however, the blue relaxed, Felix did not give up, let the hurricane pass and then began to fight shoulder to shoulder, clinging to precious points and trying to make the most of the first free mistakes of the light blue.

The occasion

Sinner managed to get two match points at 6-2 6-5 15-40, but didn’t have the strength to give his rival the last push. On the first match point he responded aggressively but then missed the attack forehand, on the second he got trapped by the Canadian’s winning forehand-serve combination. From that moment on, the game changed. Sinner exhausted all his nervous and physical energies, lost the tie-break in the second set 7-1 and then surrendered 6-1 in the third. With this result Felix Auger-Aliassime consolidates his presence in the top 10 climbing virtually on the eighth world step (personal record), while Sinner loses a position slipping to position number 13. Felix Auger-Aliassime awaits the Croatian Borna in the quarterfinals. Coric, number 152 in the world, who after killing Rafael Nadal also beat Roberto Bautista Agut. After the defeat against our Lorenzo Musetti in Monte Carlo, Aliassime has hit four consecutive quarter-finals in the Masters 1000: Madrid beaten by Zverev, Rome beaten by Djokovic, the Canadian Open beaten by Ruud and now Cincinnati.

Carlos goes

Carlos Alcaraz also goes to the quarterfinals in Cincinnati who brilliantly overtook Croatian Marin Cilic 7-6 6-1 becoming the youngest to reach the quarterfinals in the tournament since 2006 when the first flash of Scotsman Andy Murray signed this feat. Alcaraz is now expected in the quarterfinals by Cameron Norrie who has left just two games to the American wild card Ben Shelton (6-0 6-2). If Alcaraz were to win the tournament, the Spaniard would become number 2 in the ATP ranking while in the race he is fighting shoulder to shoulder with Tsitsipas always for the second position. The other two packaged quarter-finals, those of the upper part, are Medvedev-Fritz and Tsitsipas-Isner. The Greek ruled the Argentine Diego Schwartzman with a double 6-3, while John Isner needed the decisive tie-break to keep Sebastian Korda at a distance: 7-6 1-6 7-6 the score in favor of the American bomber who placed 20 aces in 15 batting rounds but lost two batting rounds during the second set.
