The horror thriller is the only one of his films that Cillian Murphy watches often.
At the beginning of 2024, the third part of the “28 Days Later” series “28 Years Later” was officially announced for 2026. As part of the promo for his latest film adaptation “Small Things Like These”, in which Cillian Murphy plays the lead role, the Irish native was interviewed in an interview with “Variety” about the science fiction film and explained: “It’s held up really well, even though it’s 23 years old now.”
Cillian Murphy shows “28 Days Later” to his children
The 47-year-old explained that he would never actually watch his own films again. However, “28 Days Later” is a special case: “It always runs around Halloween and during the pandemic people were constantly sending me clips.” Murphy wouldn’t always watch the work alone, however, because he has already shown it to his children. The reason for the exception is the timelessness that the film has despite being 23 years old. Accordingly, he would be very happy about the reunion of the set group.
Who will Cillian Murphy play?
In the first part from 2002, the “Oppenheimer” actor plays the main role Jim, who wakes up from a coma after a dangerous virus hit the country four weeks earlier and turned large parts of the population into murderous zombies. Murphy does not reveal in the interview whether his character will return. However, he clarifies: “I have always said that I would like to be there because this film changed everything for me and I have a great affection for it and for these guys Alex [Garland] and Danny [Boyle] have.”
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are set to direct “28 Years Later”. The first film in the series was followed by the second film “28 Weeks Later” in 2007. In a conversation with the “NME” Boyle explained in 2022 that he had also written a version called “28 Months Later,” but nothing came of it.
