(toskanews) – Prescriptive appropriateness and correct information. Only thanks to these two elements can we try to address the topic of mild and moderate chronic pain in adults. This was discussed in Milan at the meeting organized by Motore Sanità with the unconditional contribution of Angelini Pharma: one of the macro-regional tables for discussion between experts and institutions on the topic of chronic pain which affects around 13 million people in Italy. A real disease, which impacts not only Italian citizens, but also the hospital management of these patients and opens up evaluations on the correct use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, NSAIDs. According to a recent Real World analysis, 84% of NSAID prescriptions are inappropriate and in half of the cases they are prescribed to those who have clear contraindications to their use. Even occasional use, with 51.3% of patients receiving only one prescription per year, demonstrates the inappropriateness of NSAIDs.

In the round table moderated by Claudio Zanon, scientific director of Motore Sanità, the intervention of Marco Alparone, vice-president of the Lombardy region, was also important in this sense: «We need a care network specialized in chronic pain that first of all intercepts the need at the beginning. Often, these patients arrive late to people who have specific expertise and can accompany them in the treatment of this disease. The Lombardy Region started by recognizing chronic pain, now we need to build a network across the territory to respond to a very widespread need in the area and often unknown”.

The words of some regional councilors of Lombardy, Piedmont and Friuli-Venezia Giulia then left room for the analysis of sector managers, including Roberto Venesia, Secretary of FIMMG Piedmont Region: «In a world that is increasingly moving towards specialisation, the figure of the general practitioner takes on even more significance in a position of taking charge of complexity. In collaboration, obviously, with specialists, in an integrated management of chronic pathologies. Only in this way can we guarantee the appropriateness and sustainability of services».

Finally, the round table ended with a discussion on communication aimed at patients, between the internet, fake news and the need to give credibility to regional and national services offered by the world of healthcare.
