The British filmmaker prefers not to analyze his intentions behind it too much.
Christopher Nolan has added his eldest daughter Flora to the cast for his new film “Oppenheimer”. After visiting the set with Nolan’s wife, Emma Thomas, the work’s producer, the director decided to give his offspring the small, yet open role. Your part: an explosion victim.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Nolan explains, “We needed someone to do that small part of a somewhat experimental and impromptu scene,” says the director. “That’s why it was wonderful that she just went along with it.”
The scene in question involves an unnamed young woman whose face was disfigured by a nuclear explosion. When asked about this, Nolan himself recognizes how irritating the casting choice can seem, to which he answers in the interview: “To be honest, I try not to analyze my intentions.”
Nonetheless, he feels his decision fits well with the film’s theme: “When you develop the ultimate destructive power, it will also destroy those closest to you. I think that’s the best way I could express it.”
The new Nolan film is about the so-called “Manhatten Project” that developed the atomic bomb during World War II – led by J. Robert Oppenheimer. The cast includes Cillian Murphy as the titular protagonist, Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt and Matt Damon.
“Oppenheimer” will be released in German cinemas on July 20, 2023.
