Even before filming began in New Mexico, director Christopher Nolan shared a first impression of his new film, the black-and-white biographical drama Oppenheimer. It stars actor Cillian Murphy as physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer.
“I have become death, the destroyer of worlds”
His staring eyes go straight into the camera, in his mouth he has one of the many cigarettes that should eventually kill him. Perhaps it is the look that Oppenheimer shows after the successful detonation of an atomic bomb when he said: “I have become death, the destroyer of the worlds.” Aim to develop the first nuclear weapons. Today he is considered the “father of the atomic bomb”. However, after seeing the consequences of their use against the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Oppenheimer condemned their continued use.
First class ensemble
Emily Blunt plays his wife, Kitty Oppenheimer. The cast list also includes Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid and Josh Hartnett. According to various industry publications, Kenneth Branagh is also part of the cast of “Oppenheimer”. After “Dunkirk” and “Tenet”, it would be Christopher Nolan’s third collaboration with the Oscar-nominated Northern Irishman for “Belfast”.
Nolan, syndic of cinema
Scheduled for a July 20, 2023 release in United States cinemas, Oppenheimer is Nolan’s first film since 2002 to be distributed by Universal rather than Warner Bros. The switch to the competition is based on a difference of opinion: Because Warner Bros. wanted to release its films in cinemas and on the streaming provider HBO Max at the same time due to the effects of the pandemic, the 51-year-old turned away from the studio.
