Christoph Daum raves about Uli Hoeneß’ “human strength”

Christoph Daum, who is suffering from cancer, recently received a surprising call from his former rival Uli Hoeneß.

The former Bundesliga coach told the German Press Agency that he had gotten recovery wishes and encouraging words from all over the world.

“Also from Uli Hoeneß. He called me a few weeks ago. I was very happy that he wished me a lot of strength,” said Daum. “That’s not something that can be taken for granted, and that’s what distinguishes Uli Hoeneß. If one or the other isn’t doing so well, then he reports, that’s a very great human strength.”

Daum and Hoeneß had repeatedly had heated arguments in the Bundesliga since the late 1980s. However, their relationship had already normalized a few years ago.

Daum, 69, is currently undergoing a second round of chemotherapy. He cannot say whether he will ever return to the football business. “Right now I’m just concentrating on getting this cancer under control if possible and maybe even getting rid of it, fortunately,” Daum said. “Health is an absolute priority. I don’t think about any professional things at all because I don’t know if this opportunity will even come up.”
