Horst Hrubesch will stop as women’s national coach after the Olympic Games. Then a new coach will take over the team – he has now been chosen.
Christian Wück will be the new national coach of the German women’s national team after the Olympic Games in Paris. The German Football Association officially announced this on Friday. “Bild” previously reported.
Wück led the German U17 team to the World Cup title in Indonesia in December. The 50-year-old has been working as a coach for various youth teams at the DFB since 2012, and his contract as U17 coach expires this summer. Wück has not yet trained a women’s team.
Wück will continue to look after the German U15 until he takes office with the German women’s national team. Only then should he initiate the restart for the DFB women, according to the DFB. Former national player Maren Meinert will work alongside him as assistant coach.
“Showed what qualities he has”
“I’m really looking forward to the new task and consider it a great honor to be able to take on it. When the request came, I didn’t hesitate for long: coaching this team, further developing the existing individual quality of the players (…) is what counts one of the most exciting and responsible tasks in German football,” said Wück about his new position.
Hrubesch, who stepped in after the disappointing 2023 World Cup and the separation from Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, is leading the German selection to the Summer Games in Paris. The 72-year-old will also look after the DFB team in qualifying for the 2025 European Championship in Switzerland, which begins in April.
He himself said about his successor: “I appreciate Christian Wück and know him from the time when I first worked for the DFB. He has shown what qualities he has as a coach. That’s why I am convinced that with a good successor was found for him.”
