CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen from FC Bayern does not rule out signing Bayer Leverkusen’s top talent Florian Wirtz.
The playmaker of the current Bundesliga table leader is “a great player,” said Dreesen on the sidelines of a charity event for the German record champions at Circus Roncalli. When asked whether Wirtz would also be a player for FC Bayern, Dreesen replied: “We’ll see.”
The 20-year-old has been in top form in the Werkself jersey for weeks. The rumors about FC Bayern’s interest have also recently picked up speed again.
According to reports, there could even be a bidding war for Wirtz next summer. Numerous top foreign clubs, including FC Barcelona and financially strong Premier League representatives, are also said to be keeping an eye on the youngster.
His contract with Bayer runs until June 30, 2027. More than 100 million euros will probably be due if a club wants to let him go.
Thanks to Wirtz, Bayer is currently marching through the league and after nine match days even has two points more than their pursuers from Munich.
FC Bayern expects “an exciting battle at the top”
Dreesen emphasized that it was “too early” to describe Leverkusen as the strongest rivals in the fight for the championship.
We also have to take runner-up Borussia Dortmund “very seriously,” said the CEO of FC Bayern. “And with all the discussions about Dortmund and Leverkusen, we can’t forget RB Leipzig. There’s someone waiting in the backcourt. It’s an exciting battle at the top.”
FC Bayern will face BVB in a direct duel next Saturday (6:30 p.m.). “We have won almost all of the last games against Dortmund and are of course heading there with optimism,” said Dreesen. “But we also have respect. The atmosphere in the Westfalenstadion is incredible.”
