BrusselsHundreds of Coldplay fans gathered in front of the Amigo hotel, a stone’s throw from the Grand-Place in Brussels on Monday. The British band will stay there during the concert series in the King Baudouin Stadium. Some fans had been queuing for several hours, but at 3.30 pm lead singer Chris Martin (45) made an – albeit short – appearance.
It was a struggle for hotel Amigo in the Vruntstraat. Hundreds of fans had flocked to the hotel, hoping to catch a glimpse of their idols, the members of Coldplay. The British band will stay there during its concert series in the King Baudouin Stadium. Among the fans was also Maxime (23) from Antwerp. “Today we are combining a day in Brussels with the performance,” he says. “A few years ago, the band announced that they were no longer touring due to their environmental stance. That’s why I definitely wanted to be there today.” It will be Maxime’s first time seeing the band perform live. “But several people have already told me that their shows are really worth it. I love Coldplay because they make music for all ages, for me they are definitely in the top 3 of the best bands of all time.”
Also yesterday, fans camped at the hotel:
Darlin (54) and daughter Faye (29) from Wervik happened to be nearby when they heard that the British band was staying at the hotel. “Actually, we’ve only been here for 5 minutes,” says Darlin. “While waiting for the concert tonight, we were exploring Brussels until we learned that they were staying in this hotel. So we decided to take a look.” Mother and daughter have been fans of Coldplay for a long time. “’Yellow’ is my favorite song. But all their songs are good of course,” says Darlin. “We will also cycle from the city center to the King Baudouin Stadium, as Chris Martin had called out. Our car is parked on the outskirts of Brussels, it was just a bit too far to cycle from West Flanders to here”, she laughs.

Some fans also come from a little further, such as Hans and Jelle from the Netherlands. “We’ve been waiting for an hour now,” says Hans, “but we haven’t seen him yet.” For Hans it will be the third time he sees the band at work, for Jelle the second time. “We went to Belgium because there are no performances by Coldplay in the Netherlands this year,” says Hans. “And for Jelle it is the first time he is in Brussels, so we immediately made a weekend trip of it.”
Julia (54) and Fiona (55) even crossed the Channel to see the band at work. “It was much easier to get tickets for the concerts in Belgium than in England,” says Julia. “The concerts in our country were immediately sold out.” The duo have been fans of Coldplay for over ten years. What attracts them most about the band? “Their good music of course, but also for their values. They are committed to the environment, we can only confirm that. Chris Martin is also a very charismatic man by the way,” Fiona beams. Cycling to the King Baudouin Stadium will not be an option for the English ladies: “We are not sporty enough for that”, they laugh in unison.
At around 3:30 PM, some fans’ long wait was finally rewarded. To loud cheers from about 200 fans, lead singer Chris Martin left the hotel lobby. He waved from a distance to his fans, who had to stand behind fencing for safety. Accompanied by the police, he then continued his journey, presumably towards the King Baudouin Stadium.
On Sunday, some fans already made video images of Chris Martin in the hotel lobby.
