Chloé appoints Chemena Kamali as creative director

Cheman Kamali becomes creative director at Chloé.

The German designer will succeed Gabriela Hearst at Chloé and will debut a first pre-fall collection in January, followed by her fall 2024 runway debut during Paris Fashion Week a month later, the French luxury fashion house said on Monday.

The former Central Saint Martins graduate embodies the spirit of Chloé and was a natural choice due to her extraordinary creative talent, extensive experience and unique connection to the brand’s heritage and values, said Chloé CEO Riccardo Bellini.

For the German designer, who has worked as Women’s Ready to Wear Design Director at Saint Laurent since 2016, it is a return to Chloé. She began her career at the French fashion house under the leadership of then creative director Phoebe Philo, before returning to work for Chloé in 2013 as design director in Clare Waight Keller’s team.

“My heart has always belonged to Chloé. Ever since I walked through the doors more than 20 years ago. The return feels natural and very personal,” says Kamali. “I am very honored to take on this role and build on the vision defined by Gaby Aghion and Karl Lagerfeld at the beginning of the Maison’s history. I hope to capture the emotional connection and spirit of Chloé for today.”

Kamali follows in the footsteps of Hearst, who presented her latest collection for the French luxury fashion house at Paris Fashion Week. Hearst transformed Chloé, particularly in terms of sustainability, making the brand the first luxury fashion house to be awarded B Corp certification in 2021.
