Chinese activist flees by jet ski to South Korea: a journey of 300 kilometers | Abroad

A Chinese rights activist and critic of President Xi Jinping has fled to South Korea. He has traveled no less than 300 kilometers by jet ski. This is reported by various foreign media in response to a message from the South Korean coast guard.

The man – according to local reports Kwon Pyong – had reportedly traveled a whopping 300 kilometers across the Yellow Sea by jet ski. He carried binoculars, a compass and five liters of fuel, but got stuck in front of a cruise terminal off Incheon’s western port.

The Coast Guard eventually caught him because “he attempted to smuggle into town”. There is no suspicion that it would be a spy.

A number of countries have decided to no longer host Chinese activists fleeing the country, as Beijing has tightened its controls in recent years. The Coast Guard describes the man’s escape attempt as “one of the more extreme attempts of modern times”.
