China’s men’s team wins 13th world title

Record world champion China has won the gold medal in Liverpool for the 13th time in the team competition.

The squad from the Middle Kingdom won in the English metropolis ahead of ex-champion Japan and Great Britain.

The co-favourites, who were second in the preliminary round, lost all chances of winning after two falls on the pommel horse after the second of six rounds.

The quintet from China, on the other hand, improved after a slow start, took the lead at half-time and never relinquished it.

In the competition in the M&S Arena, which was overshadowed by numerous other mistakes, the squad from Russia was unable to defend the title they had won in Stuttgart in 2019. Because of the war of aggression in Ukraine, the seven-time world champion, like Belarus in Liverpool, is excluded from participating in the World Cup.

DTB team not in the final

The squad of the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB) had only finished twelfth in the preliminary round on Monday and thus missed out on qualifying for the final.

The USA won the women’s final on Tuesday ahead of hosts Great Britain and Canada. It was the sixth world championship title in a row for the US girls.

The world title fights will continue on Thursday (19:45 CET) with the women’s all-around decision. Also without German participation, after both Karina Schönmaier from Buchholz and Anna-Lena König from Bodersweier did not qualify among the top 24 athletes.
