China wants to recycle 25 percent of its textile waste

China wants to accelerate the transition to a circular economy in the textile industry. The National Development and Reform Commission announced earlier this week that the recycling rate for used textiles should be 25 percent by 2025.

The target corresponds to a production volume of 2 million tons of recycled fibers. By 2030, a quota of 30 percent and 3 million tons of recycled fibers should be achieved.

In order to get closer to its goals, China first wants to improve the recycling network and expand the recycling channels. In addition, textile manufacturers should take their social responsibility more seriously, environmentally friendly textile design and the use of environmentally friendly fibers are also promoted.

Textile recycling saves resources

“The recycling of textile waste is an important measure to effectively supplement the supply of raw materials to China’s textile industry and relieve pressure on resources and the environment,” the reform commission’s website says. The government agency emphasizes that textile recycling is of great importance for saving resources, reducing pollution and carbon emissions.

According to the Reform Commission’s report, the Chinese state has promoted the recycling of used textiles in recent years, for example through tax breaks and financial support. But there is still a lack of a comprehensive recycling system and efficiency in the recycling of textile waste. Industry standards and key technologies still need improvement.
