Just like in the West, Chinese companies such as Baidu, Alibaba and Bytedance are also taking major steps in the development of AI. Watchdog CAC says it encourages that innovation, but believes that artificial intelligence should also “adhere to Chinese socialist values”.
The regulator also wants Chinese people who start working with AI to make their real identity known. Companies that do not comply with the rules can be fined heavily.
The parties involved will have the opportunity to discuss the bill next month, according to the CAC. The new regulation will come into effect later this year.
The popular ChatGPT is not available in China. The company behind the service, OpenAI, has not made the software accessible to the Chinese market. Nevertheless, many Chinese try to gain access to the smart chat box by means of VPNs, encrypted internet connections.
