Child gets stuck in ‘quicksand’ of mud puddle in playground

A young child was stuck in a playground in Wintelre on Wednesday. Due to the heavy rain, the sand of the playground had turned into a sticky mud puddle with a layer of water on top. A concerned mother warns via WhatsApp about ‘quicksand’ in the playgrounds. The municipality of Eersel, to which Wintelre belongs, has announced that someone has indeed been detained. As a precaution, the other playgrounds in Wintelre have been cordoned off with tape.

A very special app went around in Wintelre: “Dear local residents, on behalf of the municipality, do not use the playgrounds with sandboxes due to quicksand! Pass this on to as many people as possible in Wintelre.” The text came from a concerned mother.

It turns out: a child was stuck in the mud in a playground on Wednesday. It happened in the playground at De Steenovens. “The mother of the child has contacted the municipality about this,” says a spokesperson. It is not known how the child was ultimately freed from his precarious position.

The municipality does not know exactly how the child got stuck. A logical explanation is that the heavy rain and wetness has turned the sand into a sticky mud puddle. There is a large layer of water in the playground with mud under the water surface. The baby probably got stuck in a layer of mud below the water surface. “After this report, the playgrounds in Wintelre were cordoned off so that they cannot be used temporarily,” a municipal spokesperson said. The playground at De Steenovens is cordoned off with a ribbon.

The app that appeared in the neighborhood app was not made by the municipality. It is not surprising, according to the spokesperson: “That was probably the concerned mother who wanted to warn other parents.” In the rest of the municipality of Eersel, playgrounds are not cordoned off.
