The child benefit moves along with the average price development. This is laid down in law and is done on the basis of the consumer price index (cpi). After sharp increases in the cpi, there is now a decline due to lower energy prices. That is why the basic amount of child benefit will be reduced by approximately 3%. This means a reduction of the quarterly amount by €8.06 for children aged 0 to 5, €9.79 for children aged 6 to 11 and €11.52 for children aged 12 and over.
In the past year, child benefit has increased by just over 16%, due to the historically high inflation in 2022. As a result, child benefit in July is €44 higher than in January 2022. A new indexation of child benefit will follow on 1 January 2024 .
Minister Van Gennip:
Child benefit increases or decreases with the costs incurred by parents based on the consumer price index. Child benefit has increased considerably in the past two indexations. Now that the cpi is falling again, mainly due to lower energy prices, child benefit is also being reduced slightly. I fully realize that this will be a setback for parents who are struggling. During the August decision-making process, the government will look at the entire purchasing power picture for 2024. In doing so, explicit attention will be paid to child poverty, families and the social security of Dutch households.
Child benefit as of 1 July 2023
Parents and carers receive child benefit for the costs of raising children up to and including 17 years of age. How high this amount is depends on the age of the child and where the child lives. The amount of child benefit will be adjusted as of 1 July 2023 in line with the development of consumer prices based on the past six months. The SVB pays the child benefit at the end of the quarter. Parents will receive the new amount around 2 October. People who have trouble making ends meet should contact the municipality, where professionals can help.
