Chiara Ferragni as Joker on L’Espresso: it’s controversy

AND controversy for the cover that the weekly The Express dedicated to Chiara Ferragni. In the issue that will be released tomorrow March 8, the digital entrepreneur is depicted in the foreground but with her face “made up” by Joker, like a sad clown. Half-length portrait, in jacket and tie, with the blue dye running under her eyes and the red one spreading her lips in a monstrous smile.

Chiara Ferragni in tears: «Fedez? This crisis is stronger than the others

Chiara Ferragni on the cover of The Express

The weekly magazine dedicated a report to the digital entrepreneur who has recently been at the center of attention, first for her legal problems linked to Pandoro-gate and then for her marriage crisis with Fedez. The service of The Express, however, he is focused on the entrepreneurial aspect of Chiara Ferragni. «Ferragni Spa. The dark side of Chiara» we read in the title. It’s still: “A tangled network of companies, a swirl of shareholdings. Between cumbersome partners, managers under investigation and low-paid employees. The influencer is in charge of an empire where transparency is not at home».

But more than the journalistic report, users noticed the cover photo of the digital entrepreneur. Many, from a feminist perspective on the eve of International Women’s Day, consider it offensive and in bad taste.

The controversy on social media

«A cover that has nothing to do with journalism but which is full of unprecedented violence. Not even American publishing had gotten this far with Harvey Weinstein. Let’s calm down” wrote the journalist Mario Manca sharing the photo of the cover of L’Espresso. «This cover isn’t just violent. It is a disfigurement and not only on Chiara Ferragni’s face. As a woman, I feel scarred» we read in a comment. And again: «Putting make-up on your face in a cover photo is uniquely vulgar», «Shame on L’Espresso. As a woman I feel offended and humiliated!». Until: “This is psychological violence».

Offensive on Women’s Day

Many, then, didn’t like it the choice to ridicule a woman on the cover on March 8th. «Even if a person makes a mistake, representing them in this way on the cover of a newspaper is offensive and above all harmful. Happy March 8th in advance» we read in a comment. «Please remember to shower us with mimosas tomorrow», the comment of the model Elisa D’Ospina.

Who agrees with The Express

Among web users, however, there is no shortage of those who find nothing scandalous in the cover of the weekly magazine. «The Express has dedicated far harsher covers to issues that have shaken the country, the ones about Berlusconi are historic but I could mention many. This cover is silly in comparison! writes a user.

The newspaper has produced many satirical covers, which have made the history of Italian journalism. We remember, for example, when Berlusconi became Andy Warhol’s Mao, Salvini Gambadilegno, Dragons Louis XIV e Giorgia Meloni Queen Elizabeth.

There are those who invite us to go beyond that photo that sparked the controversy: «Instead of stopping at the cover, you should read the title of the article which seems to be much more interesting».
