The World Chess Federation has launched an investigation into world champion Magnus Carlsen and US teenager Hans Niemann. The background is the sensational feud between the two.
In the course of the sensational feud between world chess champion Magnus Carlsen (31) and US teenager Hans Niemann (19), an investigation was initiated against both. Klaus Deventer, a member of the Fair Play Commission of the world chess association FIDE, confirmed this to the news portal t-online.
According to this, “investigations are being carried out in two directions” – once against the alleged fraudster Niemann, but also against the Norwegian Carlsen. “Are there enough facts to justify an allegation of fraud? If we conclude that this is the case, we would bring appropriate charges with the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Committee. However, we would also investigate whether a false accusation has been made.” said Deventer.
Carlsen made specific allegations of fraud
World champion Carlsen, who will not defend his title again due to a lack of motivation, recently made concrete allegations of fraud against Niemann for the first time. The 19-year-old’s progress is “unusual” and the American doesn’t seem “tense and not even fully focused on the game,” Carlsen wrote on Twitter.
The Norwegian had previously met Niemann in a top-class online tournament and ended the game after a move without comment. At the age of 16, Niemann had cheated in virtual tournaments and admitted it.
A panel of up to three members will be formed from the FIDE Fair Play Commission in the coming days to investigate the case. One of the candidates for this is Deventer.
