It’s usually well intentioned when fans call their idol “the reincarnation of XY” or something similar. However, this does not always go down well with fans of the original artists. Because for them, of course, there can only be the original. Twitter user @levdua also had to find out.
It started with a video juxtaposing Cher and Dua Lipa along with the comment “Dua Lipa, the Cher of our generation.” A resemblance could not be denied, if you compare the long black hair and their glittering outfits.
The tweet also immediately met with an initially positive response: “So much truth in one tweet,” wrote another user. But then Cher chimed in herself, flippantly defending her status: “How many of are there in a generation?” she captioned the post.

Her fanbase also got involved as a result. “Cher deserves applause for the reaction,” commented one user. “I find ‘you are the new (insert artist here)’ posts so offensive, especially when the original artists are still alive.” “Cher is Cher,” added another. “No one else will ever be Cher. Point”.
Eventually @levdua deleted the video but defended the post: “I just loved Dua and you’s style. A few people didn’t get the message.” The user takes the whole situation with humor: In a new tweet, instead, there are two photos of Dua Lipa next to each other, this time with the comment: “After a tiring day, I can confirm that Dua Lipa is the Dua Lipa of our generation.”

What Dua Lipa himself thinks of the debate is not yet known. So far, she has not entered into the discussion on Twitter.
