Chemistry very practical: insights into the working world of analytics

Master’s students from all over Germany from different chemistry courses are guests at the Lübeck University of Technology for two weeks as part of the “Spring School for Industrial Analytics”. As a University of Applied Sciences, the transfer between research, teaching and practical application, as offered by this wonderful format of the Society of German Chemists, is particularly important to us. said Muriel Helbig, President of the TH Lübeck, when welcoming us. Analytical chemistry is a promising field of study for the future. In our course applied Chemistry and especially in our new master’s program “Sustainable chemistry“The career prospects are excellent.

Society of German Chemists organizes and finances the spring school

27 participants from five different universities were recommended by their respective university lecturers to take part in this special event. The “Spring School for Industrial Analytics” has been held annually since 2011 at changing locations by the Industrial Forum for Analytics within the Analytical Chemistry specialist group Society of German Chemists (GDCh) aligned and financed. The TH Lübeck will be the host university for this annual block event for the second time in March 2024. In 2022, due to corona, the event was online with the help of the ZDL been aligned. I am very grateful that they have been organizing and promoting this close connection between students and businesses for 14 yearsemphasized Helbig.

The aim of the spring school is, in addition to professional impulses, to introduce students to the world of work in industry and to give them personal insights into the everyday work of analysts. The organizers of this year’s two-week block event were Prof. Dr. Veronika Hellwig and Verena Wanders from the TH Lübeck (Department of Applied Natural Sciences and Center for Industrial Biotechnology) and Dr. Eva-Maria Frühauf and Dr. Michael Arlt from Industrial Forum Analytics Working Group.

Excursions to companies in Hamburg and Neumünster

The participants want to deal intensively with analytical methods and questions that are particularly important in industrial analytics. Lecturers from companies in the chemical-pharmaceutical and equipment industries traveled every day to provide information about industry-relevant analytical topics in the areas of methodology, process analysis and quality assurance and quality management. Topics such as entrepreneurial activity, social skills and successful applications to industrial companies were also on the program. There is also plenty of space for networking with practice representatives and each other.

The excursions are particularly popular every year. This year we visited the Eurofins Campus in Hamburg Harburg and the Schleswig-Holstein state laboratory and the KIN Food Institute on the program in Neumünster: In addition to the technical program, the students had the opportunity to get to know Lübeck and the surrounding area on city tours and museum visits. Dr. Veronika Hellwig, Professor of Analytical Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis, draws a positive conclusion: For years, the spring school has been a great opportunity for young chemists and chemical engineers to gain practical insights into the various fields of analytical chemistry and to make contacts with potential employers and future colleagues.
