Next blow for Chelsea FC: The club’s credit cards were frozen by the British government. The reigning Champions League winner can probably not even fill up the team bus with this.
Chelsea’s credit cards have been frozen. At least that’s what the online portal “The Athletic” reports. This makes the scenario of the insolvency of the reigning Champions League winner more and more realistic. The London giants have been hit by UK government sanctions against their owner, Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich (read more here).
It was previously said that Chelsea’s game operations were secured by a “special license” that allows the club to cover running costs. This is unlikely to be the case anymore as the sanctions against Abramovich have now been extended to include the club’s corporate credit cards.
According to “The Athletic”, this rigorous approach has led to Chelsea currently not being able to fill up their team bus. The journey to the Champions League game against Lille (Wednesday, from 9 p.m. in the t-online ticker) is not in danger, the club has already paid for the trip to France. Several English media reports that the “Blues” would travel by train to the round of 16 duel against the reigning French champions.
