After spending a record €612m in 2022/23, Chelsea are now working on record earnings in the transfer market. With Ethan Ampadu’s move to second division side Leeds United for €8m, the Blues have earned €254m from player sales this summer – a figure that has only been topped twice in footballing history.

AS Monaco set the previous record for a transfer period in the summer of 2018, when €365m was generated. Despite 13 departures, there are other sales candidates in the Chelsea squad, as Daniel Busch, Area Manager Transfermarkt UK, knows:
“With players like Conor Gallagher, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Hakim Ziyech and Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea could still break the revenue record. This is also necessary in view of the regulations of financial fair play, which is why some transfers were completed before July 1st for accounting reasons. Chelsea have long been good at generating income on the transfer market: although they have been the only club to have invested over two billion in the squad since 2013/14, no club has made any more money since 2013/14.”
Since being taken over by Todd Boehly and his business partners at the end of May 2022, Chelsea have moved over €1bn on the transfer market: spending €724m on 20 arrivals versus taking €322m on 16 exits – 12 more professionals have left the Blues on a free transfer and Mauricio Pochettino is the fourth head coach in 12 months. This summer, Chelsea have parted ways with a potential starting XI that is impressive.
These transfer activities ensured a makeover in the team. With an average age of 23.8 years, the Londoners have by far the youngest squad in the Premier League – if you leave out the sales candidates Lukaku, Aubameyang and Ziyech, the average is just under 23 years.
Chelsea have massive pay cuts thanks to makeover
“Thanks to the radical rejuvenation of the roster, the Blues are enjoying massive pay cuts and by September 1st, the next 21-year-old could be brought in in Moisés Caicedo. In order to handle such a transfer, however, additional income should be necessary, ”said England expert Busch. The Monegasque revenue record from 2018 could shake if Boehly wants to continue shopping.
