Chelsea FC instead of Manchester City: According to media reports, the Blues won the race for Marc Cucurella. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, among others, the fee for the left-back, who still has a contract with Brighton & Hove Albion until 2026, is 52.5 million pounds, the equivalent of a good 62.8 million euros.

Update 9:55 p.m.: Shortly after the reports, Brighton released a succinct statement via Twitter on Wednesday evening, denying that there was an agreement on a deal. “Contrary to inaccurate reports from numerous media outlets tonight, no agreement has been reached with any club to sell Marc Cucurella.”

This would make the 24-year-old the most expensive left-back in history. With the “Seagulls” he would also be a new record sale for the club. Ben White (24) still holds this position with his EUR 58.5 million transfer to Arsenal. The Blues would meanwhile be the club with the highest spending in this transfer window. FC Barcelona is still at the top.

Transfer spending summer 2022: 51 million difference between Bayern and BVB

Cucurella will sign a working paper with the Londoners until 2028. He is due to travel to London with his advisors on Thursday morning to complete the obligatory medical check-up. After (27), (31) and goalkeeper (18), he will be the fourth new signing for coach Thomas Tuchel this summer. The former Dortmund player has been calling for reinforcements for the defense for some time after Antonio Rüdiger (29) and Andreas Christensen (26) left the club on a free transfer. Central defender Levi Colwill (19) from Chelsea U23, on the other hand, should go the opposite way and join Brighton.

Race for Brighton’s Cucurella: Man City appears to be empty-handed

For a long time, Man City was considered the most promising candidate for Cucurella’s commitment before the Blues got involved. The “Citizens” were previously unwilling to meet the high transfer demands of the “Seagulls” for the Spaniard, even if this player is said to be Pep Guardiola’s. Man City were not willing to put more than around €47.5m (£40m) on the table for Cucurella.
