Chelsea FC: Abramovich denies repayment of his 1.9 billion loan

Chelsea sale

In an official statement by Chelsea FC, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has announced that he will by no means demand repayment of his 1.9 billion euro loan. The owner of the Premier League club promised to write off the club’s debts to him. Several media had previously reported that, contrary to previous announcements, Abramovich now wanted to be compensated for his loan to the club.

The latter would have jeopardized the club’s license and has now been denied by the 55-year-old through a spokesman: “Firstly, Mr Abramovich’s intentions in relation to donating the proceeds of the Chelsea sale to charity have not changed. (…) Secondly, Mr Abramovich has not asked for the repayment of a loan – such reports are completely false – as well as that Mr Abramovich increased the club’s price at the last minute,” read the statement released by Chelsea FC . Abramovich will not have access to the funds before or after the sale. He remains committed to “finding a good manager for Chelsea.”

Abramovich put the London club up for sale before the British government hit him with tough sanctions for his closeness to Russian President Vladimir Putin, which also hit Chelsea – the fourth most valuable team in the world. A purchase of the club must therefore also be approved by the British government and the Premier League. The government had set a deadline of May 31 for the sale and the corresponding clarification of all formalities.

According to the English media, a consortium led by billionaire and co-owner of the LA Dodgers baseball team, Todd Boehly, had recently been awarded the first contract.
