Chelsea coach Hayes takes over US women’s team

As expected, former world coach Emma Hayes will take over the vacant position of national coach at the four-time women’s soccer world champion USA starting next spring. The 47-year-old is currently working in her English homeland at top London club Chelsea FC with three German players and, according to the association, will succeed Vlatko Andonovski on the US team shortly before the 2024 Olympic tournament in Paris

Andonovski resigned last summer after the USA’s round of 16 exit at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Until then, Twila Kilgore will continue to act as interim coach for the US team.

US media had already reported on Hayes’ upcoming engagement with the US team at the beginning of the month. Chelsea, in turn, had already announced at this point that Hayes would be leaving the English WSL champions at the end of the season “to pursue a new opportunity outside of the WSL and club football.”

Hayes, World Coach of the Year 2021, has been in charge of the Blues since 2012 and has since won the championship six times and the FA Cup five times. In London, their squad includes Ann-Katrin Berger, Sjoeke Nüsken and Melanie Leupolz.
