Chelsea: César Azpilicueta joins Atlético Madrid

César Azpilicueta returns to his native Spain after 13 years. The 33-year-old defender leaves Chelsea a year before his contract expires and joins Atlético Madrid. The Rojiblancos confirmed the transfer on Thursday, around an hour after the Blues announced the captain’s departure with an emotional video message.

Despite his valid working paper in London, Azpiliczueta is moving to the Spanish capital on a free transfer, where he has signed a contract until the summer of 2024. Most recently, he played in LaLiga for his youth club CA Osasuna until 2010, before landing at Chelsea via Olympique Marseille two years later.
