Checking in with your bank card or telephone at the NS, that’s how it works

Too many cards in your wallet? From now on you can leave your public transport chip card at home, because travelers can now check in for the train anywhere in Brabant and the rest of the Netherlands with a bank card or telephone. You could do that on the bus.

After the bus companies Arriva and Hermes, the NS is also tacking, after a test went well. For the time being, it only concerns second class travel. An OV chip card is still required for first class or if you travel with a discount or a season ticket.

Transferring is no problem. Also to the trains of QBuzz in the Dordrecht region or Arriva in Limburg. During a ticket check, place your payment card or mobile phone on the conductor’s device.

Google Pay
To pay with your phone, you must use Google Pay or Apple Pay. With a debit card, contactless payment must be enabled.

You can also link your bank card to your public transport account view the travel history, for example to be able to declare travel. But if you don’t need that history, linking isn’t necessary either.

With check-in by debit card or telephone, the NS is mainly targeting travelers who do not often travel by public transport. Until now you had to buy a public transport chip card for 8.50 euros, without having traveled a kilometre. That’s why some people chose the car anyway.

Remove from wallet
Do you pay with a bank card? Then you have to take it out of your wallet, the NS warns. Otherwise, several bank cards may be read at the same time and the trip may be paid for several times.

If you forget to check out, you can correct this online at OV Pay, after which it will be checked whether your money has been credited get back.

If you are in the red you can check in, but not check out. You will then be placed on a special refusal list. You can only use your bank card to travel again when you have money in your account again and have paid for the previous trip.

This video from the NS shows how it works.
