Cheaper travel by train now that petrol is very expensive: fact or fiction?

Due to the war in Ukraine, petrol prices have risen to 2.40 euros per liter. Cheaper ways to get to work are therefore a dream for many people from Brabant. But is public transport cheaper than the car? These four commuting routes show the difference.

The suggested retail price for Euro95 petrol is around 2.40 euros per litre. An average petrol car drives 14 kilometers on 1 liter of petrol. The current prices for train and bus tickets can be found via 9292 and the NS journey planner

Eindhoven – Breda
If you drive every day from Eindhoven to Breda, you will cover a total of 120 kilometers. That will cost you 20.40 euros in petrol per day. The monthly costs are then 408 euros. Are you lucky and are you not stuck in a traffic jam during your ride on the A58? Then it will take you about 45 minutes by car.

Train travelers can reach Breda Central in 40 minutes from Eindhoven Central, but add a few minutes to get to work from the station. Often with the return ticket of 23.80 euros per day, there is also an amount of 3.90 euros per day for a bus ticket. For example, the total travel costs by public transport rise to 554 euros per month.

Tilburg – Drunen
If you drive 50 kilometers a day, that will cost you 3.5 liters of petrol. For people who drive to work between Tilburg and Drunen, that is 8.40 euros per day in travel costs. In that case, the route to work costs 168 euros per month. For that price you are on the road for half an hour.

A return ticket for the train costs 10.40 euros per day, plus a bus ticket of 6.70 euros per day. That equates to 17.10 euros per day and 343 euros per month. Not only are the costs higher with public transport. It takes more than 50 minutes to get to work by train and bus.

Oisterwijk – Heeze
There are also train connections outside the cities, but these routes are often not cheaper than the car. For example, motorists between Oisterwijk and Heeze cover 90 kilometers every day, which costs them 6.4 liters of petrol and therefore 15.36 euros per day. Monthly you end up with 307.20 euros. This journey takes about 36 minutes by car.

A sprinter runs every half hour between Oisterwijk and Heeze. The journey takes 42 minutes. You are then at the station, so the road to work still has to be covered. In smaller towns, businesses are more likely to be within walking distance than in the city, so a train ticket is the only cost. Nevertheless, a return ticket by train will cost you 17.20 euros per day, which comes out to 344 euros per month.

Breda – Rotterdam
Of course there are also people from Brabant who work above the rivers. If you go there and back by car from Breda to Rotterdam, it is approximately 100 kilometers. That costs 17.04 euros a day, which comes out to 340.80 euros per month. It takes 45 minutes for the one-way trip.

With the train you take a lot shorter over that distance. For example, you are 25 minutes in the intercity from Breda to Rotterdam, but then you are not yet at your final destination. A return ticket for the intercity costs 20.80 per day. For example, you pay €416 per month for train journeys only. It won’t save you money, but it might save you some hours in traffic on the A16.

Road tax and insurance costs are not included in the calculations of the petrol costs. Parking costs are also not included because it is assumed that there are parking facilities at work. If you have an OV season ticket, it will probably be cheaper.
