Charles Leclerc guilty after crash: ‘Go and lock myself up’ | Motorsport

For a moment it seemed that Leclerc stated that a problem with the accelerator pedal caused the crash, but he raised his hand moments later. ,,It was just a mistake, my mistake”, said a disillusioned Monegask, who has now amassed 63 points less than Max Verstappen.

Watch the crash below:

,,I don’t think I’ve ever been at a higher level like this year. But I won’t buy anything for that if I make mistakes like this. We were fast, I think we could have won the race. That means I threw away 25 points. Add to that Imola’s seven points, when I also made a mistake, and you come to 32. If I miss that many points at the end of the season, I know it’s my own fault and I don’t deserve the title . I’m going to lock myself up at home and be alone for a while.”

Leclerc says he struggled in his Ferrari all weekend despite his pole position on Saturday. “It was difficult to find the right balance. In this heat it’s hard to stay consistent. I haven’t been and I’m paying the price for that. I’ll keep believing in it until the end, but it doesn’t look good.”

The Ferrari driver did mention that he appreciated that immediately after hearing about Leclerc’s crash, Verstappen asked over the radio whether his competitor was physically unharmed.
