Train passengers in Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe should also expect overcrowded trains today, both between Zwolle and Leeuwarden and on the Leeuwarden – Groningen route.
NS advises travelers between Zwolle and Groningen to travel via Assen, Hoogeveen and Meppel, but due to work on the railway near Hoogeveen, only buses run between Meppel and Hoogeveen.
Shorter trains
Despite the extra travelers from Groningen, shorter than usual trains run between Leeuwarden and Zwolle. NS uses some of the usual trains on routes to the Floriade in Lelystad.
According to the NS travel planner, the train connection between Groningen and Zwolle, via Leeuwarden and with the fast train from Arriva, is a lot longer (about 45 km), but still 8 minutes shorter than the route via Assen and Meppel. This is because buses are now running there due to construction work at Onnen and Hoogeveen.
