Chaos around AZ – Legia Warsaw: riot police unconscious and two Polish players arrested

Both before and after last night’s match between AZ and Legia Warsaw, it was restless around the stadium in Alkmaar. Fans of the Polish club stormed the entrance gate of the away section beforehand. A police officer from the Mobile Unit (ME) became unconscious. After the match, two arrests were made at the players bus, these were players from Legia Warsaw, according to Polish media.

The police report that Legia supporters used a lot of violence against stewards and police officers before the match. “Tear gas was used to protect our own safety and that of the stewards,” writes the police in a press release. Some supporters managed to take pepper spray and batons from the riot police. A police spokesperson does not know whether these were also used.

The unconscious police officer was unable to continue after treatment. The disturbances caused a number of visitors to go to the visitors’ section without a ticket or checking the ticket.

‘Players arrested’

After the match, two arrests were made at the players bus for assault. One of the suspects is a 28-year-old man from Serbia, the other is a 33-year-old man from Portugal. According to Polish media, the players were from the Legia Warsaw team, but the police cannot confirm this. Images circulating online show two players being taken away by the police.

Both men are still in custody. “Two people were assaulted at the stadium,” the police spokesperson said. One of them was so injured that he had to go to hospital. He will report it later. “The other person has already reported assault.”

Alkmaar had previously decided that fans of Legia Waschau were not allowed to enter the city center due to the preparations for the celebration of the Alkmaar Relief. The area around the station in Alkmaar and the stadium was designated by the mayor as a safety risk area, because Legia supporters had fireworks with them and the agreements were not adhered to. This means that preventive searches were allowed in these areas.
